Every language has expressions that make perfect sense to the people who speak it—but sound completely confusing when translated literally.
Think about Argentine Spanish.
If you translate them word for word, they sound strange. Yet every Argentine immediately understands exactly what they mean.
The same is true in English.
Native speakers rarely say exactly what the words mean on the surface. Instead, they use collocations and fixed expressions that have developed naturally over time. That’s why learning vocabulary isn’t enough—you also need to learn which words belong together.
